Shelleena holds a Bachelor’s of Arts (BA) with focus in Sociology from the University of Guelph. She also holds a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Masters of Social Work (MSW), both from Ryerson University and she is registered with the BC College of Social Workers.
Shelleena started her career working within Mental Health agencies that supported people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, developmental and intellectual disabilities and acquired brain injuries. Next, Shelleena spent time working within a fostering agency and closely with families touched by this experience. Shelleena then moved to working with organizations that dealt with interpersonal and sexual violence and the impacts on perpetrators and survivors, this is where her career into counselling started. Since then, Shelleena has completed both Level One and Two Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and is continuing her professional development at all times. She has also completed research in feminist parenting, transracial foster placements, sexual violence and alternative models of justice, transformative justice as well as aided in research on the intersection of Indigenous communities and IPV.
Shelleena comes from a social work background and therefore has less of a clinical lens and more of a holistic one. She has a critical understanding of societal and systemic issues and the barriers they create, by using an Anti-Oppressive Perspective, guided by a queer lens. She sees therapy as a conversation with purpose that is an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. While centering the client as the expert in their lives, she utilizes a collaborative and relational approach. She has a relaxed and warm energy, is non-judgemental and creates a safe and uplifting environment. Shelleena uses a variety of therapeutic techniques (i.e. Narrative Therapy, Strength-based perspectives, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Trauma Informed and Talk Therapy) and continues to expand. Shelleena is excited to build meaningful connections and would be honoured to be a part of your journey to health.
